Our family bathroom renovation is back underway, after a rather annoying hiccup that left us without any bathroom fittings for nearly a week (thanks to a no-show by the plasterer the day after we ripped everything out). Although the twins were happy enough to be hosed down in the garden in the milder weather last week, I’m not sure how happy they’ll be now autumn has set in, so fingers crossed we have a functioning bath back soon.
I thought it was time to share our ideas for the design of our family bathroom – and the design can be summed up in one word – WHITE. The time when we needed to make all the design decisions (suite, tiles etc) came when I was in the middle of a big work project, and my creative brainspace was already at maximum capacity. Keeping all our choices simple, with a classic white bathroom suite and large white tiles meant that we could move the project forward, safe in the knowledge we’d have a blank canvas we could add our own style and personality onto at a later date.
The negatives often levelled at white bathrooms are that they feel cold and sterile, but I’ve always loved their simplicity and the clean lines they allow. And if your bathroom isn’t huge, like ours isn’t, white will bounce light around the room to make it feel brighter and more spacious.
The other huge advantage of a white bathroom is that you can add colour easily and cheaply with paint, furniture and accessories. If, like me, you tend to be fickle and are constantly changing your favourite colour, then this is perfect because you can give your white bathroom a new look whenever the mood takes you. White works with any colour – from black and slate grey for a monochrome look, to vivid, tropical shades for something more energetic and uplifting.
In celebration of white bathrooms, here’s a selection of some of my favourites I’ve come across recently.
