I’m a big fan of decorating with neutrals, but I make an exception when it comes to the kids’ bedrooms, where we’ve taken a more colourful approach. When these were decorated a couple of years ago, we used bright colours that the twins chose themselves (yellow for Ez, and a vivid green for Fonz) – these feel fun, fresh and full of energy.
When it comes to kids’ rooms, one super-easy way to add colour that can be changed very easily is with bed linen. The bed tends to be the largest piece of furniture in the room, and so it’s the perfect blank canvas for a splash of colour. And the brilliant thing is that it’s not permanent, so if your child’s favourite colour changes as quickly as their shoe size, then you can change up the accent colour in the room without needing to get out a paint brush.
Secret Linen Store is a a small online bed linen brand who design and make all their own cotton bedding. To show how simple it is to embrace colour in bedrooms, I picked a couple of sets from their children’s range that would make the kids’ rooms even more colourful, and cheer us all up in these long, grey winter months.
Ez’s bedroom is by far the most colourful in our house with its sunshine yellow feature wall. Yellow is one of her favourite colours, so I chose a yellow bed linen set to really layer up the colour. I was slightly worried about how the softer, butter yellow of the Apples bedding would sit next to that brilliant yellow wall, but I love the two shades together. Plus the bedding is reversible, so if the yellow side had been too much, I could have flipped it over and gone for the more neutral option with yellow apples instead.
Fonz’s indoor climbing wall has mountains painted in a bright, vibrant green to reflect his love of the outdoors. Both the twins are big fans of star designs, so the Green Stars bedding set jumped out straight away. Again, the set is reversible so you’ve got two options, but I love that fresh green, so we’ve gone for that.
Not only does the bedding look great, but the children’s sets are made in 100% Cotton, with 50% Egyptian cotton and Secret Linen Store’s standard premium quality 260 thread count, so they feel lovely and soft as well. I can confirm this is the case because once I’d made up their beds, I may have had a little lie down in Ez’s room for a rest…
