He has his climbing wall in his new bedroom, but Fonz is also very keen on colouring, so creating a workspace was also a must. To save floor space for playing, I thought it would be a good idea to build a desk that could be folded away when not in use. Ikea sells a wall-mounted drop-leaf table, but ideally I wanted something in plywood to match the climbing wall and if we constructed something ourselves then I knew that we could make the most of every last inch of space. The back plate is just a sheet of 18mm… View Post

Since we swapped our old double bed in the guest room for a Hemnes daybed from Ikea to free up some floor space, we’ve needed to come up with a bedside table solution. The drawers pull out to turn the single bed into a double, but once we’ve done that there isn’t space for a bedside table between the bed and doorway, so we decided a wall-mounted option was our best bet. We chose our favourite DIY material, plywood, swapped our usual drill for Gorilla Wood Glue, and got building. I sketched out a super-simple design for a wall-mounted bedside shelf – it… View Post

We’ve used plywood plenty of times in projects around our house, but its always been hidden away rather than left on show in its natural state. I keep coming across fantastic home design ideas using plywood in all its glory, and I love the clean and modern look it gives to a space. Plywood – a manufactured wood panel made from layers of wood veneer which is available in a number of different thicknesses – is cheap, easy to work with and offers huge design potential, making it perfect for experimenting with ideas for kids’ rooms (and grown-up spaces, too).… View Post

I realised recently that I’ve never actually got round to properly sharing Ez’s bedroom makeover from last year. I showed you her brother’s indoor climbing wall and flip-down desk, and I did a video about the plywood Ikea-hack in Ez’s room, but never followed it up with a proper post. And she absolutely loves her room, so it seems only fair to share it here. I have a thing for plywood in kids’ rooms, so when we moved the twins into their own bedrooms last Christmas, I wanted to make it a feature of their new spaces. I love the… View Post

We recently decorated our hallway, stairway and landing – finally ridding the house of its last areas of beige and magnolia, and painting everything a fresh, bright white. Obviously this meant taking everything down off the walls, and I’ve taken my time deciding what to fill that great, white expanse of wall on the stairway. I wanted to try to introduce some plants there if I could, but I couldn’t work out quite how to go about doing it. Then I went along to B&Q’s recent press show, and saw some clever wall hooks made using plywood – we were… View Post
